UK freight services workers and other members of the public have said that rising fuel prices are their top concern when it comes to transport issues.

In a poll carried out by the RAC Foundation, 68 per cent of motorists said the cost of petrol and diesel worries them more than any other road-related problem as they struggle to cope with the expense of filling their tanks.

The state of Britain's roads was also highlighted as a big issue, while 24 per cent highlighted congestion as their biggest bugbear, the Press Association reports.

Meanwhile, road safety was also brought up by 22 per cent of respondents.

Professor Stephen Glaister, director of the RAC Foundation, said the figures are to be expected under current circumstances.

"The price of fuel has become a critical issue and it is not hard to understand why. A year ago the price of a litre of unleaded was 117p, today it is around 132p, he pointed out.

Earlier this month, the Federation of Small Businesses found that almost eight in ten small businesses have been harmed by the high cost of fuel.
